Roche archivist lectures at The National Archives

The wealth of material relating to British history held in the Roche Historical Collection and Archive in Basel, Switzerland was demonstrated in the talk delivered at Kew by its curator, Alexander L Bieri, in February 2011. The UK affiliate of the Swiss pharmaceutical giant was established in 1908 and its early days in London and, subsequently, Welwyn Garden City were vividly described in a presentation illustrated with a rich variety of images.

From the outset, Roche aimed to be a global business and its willingness to embrace innovation, to encourage unorthodox thinking within the company and to promote modern ideas in architecture were some of the defining characteristics of the enterprise.

The full talk, The Second World War and Roches expansion to the West: a Swiss pharmaceutical company in the United Kingdom, will be available in due course as a podcast on The National Archives website.

It is hoped to include further lectures based around UK business archive collections in the programme of public talks at The National Archives. Both volunteer speakers and suggestions would be welcome and should be directed to Alex Ritchie, the Business Archives Advice Manager alex.ritchie@nationalarchives.gsi.gov.uk
